Today is Yom Kippur, known as the Day of Atonement. (from 6 PM Tuesday to 6 PM Wednesday).
The Day of Atonement is the holiest day on God’s calendar. It is the 6th Feast Day and a day of soul affliction. On this day, we spend 24 hours of soul-searching and repentance. We look inward and ask God to deal with the “root” of the sin nature within. Remember, it is the root that produces the fruit. The Day of Atonement links with the number 6 as it is the 6th feast.
Man was created on the 6th day and the Adamic nature must come to an end. The only remedy for the carnal self is the death of the cross. The Adamic nature, which produces sin must be crucified and buried. It must be reduced to ashes by the fire of God. We must go through the purging like Isaiah, as seen in Isaiah 6, and also Zechariah the High Priest, as seen in Zechariah 3. Soul affliction means, “to repent; to mourn; to cast down.” Because the soul is linked to our mind, will and emotions, we must have a “weaned” soul. David said, “Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.” The word “wean” is defined, “To detach from a source of dependence.” In other words, our soul must be set free from wanting its own way and only bow to the will of God. When we mature in God, we possess a “weaned” soul.
The Day of Atonement was the only day that the high priest was allowed to go behind the veil and enter the Holy of Holies. But note the requirements:
1. He had to take a bath first
2. He had to remove his beautiful outer garment and wear only white linen
3 He had to carry the blood of the slain animal with him
4. He had to carry the censor with fire and incense
We cannot approach God in our sinful condition. We can only approach God based on His merits and His blood. This is the reason that Aaron had to carry the censor with the incense which would create a cloud of smoke. That cloud of smoke had to go BEFORE Aaron and stood between him and the Ark of the Covenant as he sprinkled the Mercy Seat with the blood of the slain animal. The cloud of smoke is representative of our prayers and worship. Our prayers and worship precede us and pave the way for us to enter the Holy of Holies, covered in His blood!
Let us all be in an attitude of prayer and repentance during this 24 hour period. And as David prayed, let us pray the same, “Search ME, O God, and know MY heart, test me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.: -Psalm 139:23-24
As this is a national day of repentance for Israel, let us join them in this day, as we are the spiritual Israel. It’s time for all of us to search our own hearts and deal with the root of our sin. We cannot continue to repent of the same sins day after day. There must be a time when sin no longer rules and the nature of Christ takes over! I will be in prayer and repentance and consecration through Wednesday at 6 PM. I would ask everyone reading this post to do the same. We are to be a “Holy Priesthood” unto God, separated and consecrated unto Him.
Leviticus 23:27 “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.”
